Logar valley experience
Logar valley (Logarska dolina), U-shaped glacial valley which is nestled in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, is one of the most stunning, impressive and picturesque Europe’s hidden gems.
Just imagine narrow zig-zag roads, green meadows, an amphitheater of bare summits with very steep slopes, imposing 2000 meters high alpine peaks, stunning vistas, stone cottages and rustic farmhouses. Logar valley is a perfect wild playground for outdoor adventure and an immersive natural escape you dream about returning to.
7 kilometers long Logar valley is protected landscape park so there is an entry fee to the area (5 EUR/motorbike, 7 EUR/car, 8 EUR/van, 30 EUR/bus). If you are staying in the valley, you’ll only need to pay once for the duration of your trip (ask your accommodation owner to stamp the entry fee bill!).
Top things to do in Logar valley
Go for a hike to Rinka waterfall
In Logar valley there are more than 20 waterfalls but the best-known and the star of Logar valley is 90- meters high Rinka waterfall just at the end of the valley. From the parking place there is a 10 minutes easy walk to the waterfall. Orlovo gnezdo is a treehouse-like hut from where you can admire Rinka waterfall and the colors of the rocky mountains.
Drive the Solcava panoramic road
37 kilometers long scenic road, weaving through the picturesque villages, high-altitude farms and stunning vistas over the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the valley below, is definitely one of the most beautiful parts of the entire region. There are 3 sections (green, blue, orange line) with 12 marked stops with viewpoints on the way. Our favorites were number 4, 6, 7 (the best view of the Logar valley!) and 8. The road is a perfect combination of the various nature viewpoints, tasting local delights at the farms, following the local stories and explanations about the region and its traditions.
Taste local food
The food in this region is organic, local grown and fresh. Do not miss tasting sirnek (aged cheese), Zgornjesavinjski želodec (Upper-Savinja salami) and žlinkrofi (boiled dumplings). We stopped by Bevsek Osep Farm which deals with organic mountain tea. The farmstead dates back in 15th century and consists of numerous buildings (old mill which was in operation until 60s, a large barn with adorable frescoes, just to mention a few). All of the herbs are handpicked from the surrounding mountain pastures. Alpski druzinski čaj tea blend is a mixture of wild marjoram, calendula, dandelion leaves, elderflower, wild thyme, and much more.
Visit Robanov kot
Robanov kot is a glacial valley neighboring the Logar valley. This tranquil valley, which got its name from one of the oldest Slovenian farms, winds through idyllic meadow and dense mountain forest. It is a perfect place to avoid the summer crowds of the Logar valley. The best way to experience Robanov kot is by walk.
Visit Matkov kot
Matkov kot is the most secluded and wild valley neighboring Logar valley. The valley gets its name from Matk farm that is dealing with goat milk products. Savor their homemade goat milk ice cream. We tasted 4 different types and we craved for more.
Staying at the tourist farm Gradisnik
Solcavsko region offers many great accommodation options from hotels to inns, b&b and farmstays. We decided to stay at Gradisnik farmstay which is the first farm in Matkov kot. It lies on a sunny meadow in the midst of the mountain pasture with a terrific mountain views. Upon arrival we were greeted with homemade blueberry brandy and then taken to our cozy, clean apartment. The whole farm was renovated in mid-19th century and it is a great example of a typical rustic architecture of Solcavsko region. The owner Breda with her family is a great host who has a vast knowledge about what to do in the area.
Gradisnik farmstay offers 2 double rooms and 2 apartments. Simply equipped apartment with wooden furniture, bathroom, kitchen, double bed and a bunk bed, offers great views on surrounding lush mountains. The kids loved the playground with a swing. They took the advantage of playing with Ron and Jon as well so as to admire the cows grazing the grass and the little chicken playing around. The place which lies at the right location to reach all must-see-attractions is so quiet and peaceful. At the farmstay there is even a charging station for electric vehicles. Rest, breath fresh air and enjoy the quietness.
Gradisnik farmstay is a welcoming retreat all year round for nature lovers, hikers and families with small children. It is for sure one of the best Slovenian farmstay with breathtaking mountain views.
