My partner and I stayed at Herbal house during early August 2019. It was one of our stop-overs during our cycling holiday in Slovenia. We also booked a private tour with Vesna to see a local cheese maker, bee farmer and prosciutto producer. It was an amazing experience. At the cheese-farmer we witnessed 90% of the process of making Bovek cheese the traditional way. We were also lucky enough to taste some of the cheese and it was lovely. Next we went to a bee farmer outside Kanal. She was one of the bigger farmer with around 80 hives. We learned about bees, the different plants in the area that gets pollinated by the bees as well as daily duties of a bee farmer. Afterwards we tasted the honey from 6 different plants/harvesting times while eating lovely home made biscuits. Lastly we went to a prosciutto farm in the Karst region. We not only learned about the art of prosciutto making, we also learned how families had to adapt overnight during war times. We were fortunate to taste some of the prosciutto under an ancient mulberry tree. Vesna was very knowledgeable about the region, its history as well as the different farms we visited. The lunch we had was typical of the area and very tasty. What stood out during the entire tour was the friendliness of everybody we met and their willingness welcome us on their farms and share with us what they do. It was truly a wonderful day and something I would recommend to anybody that want to learn (and taste) more about the traditional culinary arts of the region.
