Osmica Open Door Local Restaurant or shortly osmica is a temporary local restaurant/tavern in Vipava valley and Karst region. Twice per year farmers open their doors for eight days and welcome guests with wine and traditional homemade specialties. This custom attracts visitors every year from far and beyond and is for sure a traditional gourmet adventure you don’t want to miss when exploring Vipava valley.

The osmica tradition, which is preserved until today, dates back 200 years under the reign of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Joseph II. who issued a decree allowing wine growers an eight-day period for selling their surplus of wine without paying a tax with the aim to prepare a space in the barrels for the upcoming grape harvest.

Nowadays cosy local taverns where it feels almost like home, serve authentic local dishes and unbottled wine. Beside local wine, farmers are offering home dried meat products (prosciutto, sausage, pancetta, ham, salami), cheese, cabbage or turnip stews, pork steaks, sausages, home-baked bread, desserts (potica, štruklji dumplings), spirits and liqueurs so as home-made non-alcoholic beverages. The symbol of osmica is the bouquet of ivy or fraska. It is attached to a wooden sign with the name of the place, where osmica is taking place, written on it. Those wooden signs with a bouquet of ivy can be found at the roundabouts and at the crossroads.
